Motion Control and Industry 4.0
If you work within the manufacturing sector, then you’ll likely be aware that the term ‘Industry 4.0’ is used to describe the fourth industrial revolution. Industry 4.0 is commonly described as the industry that will merge traditional automation with information technology. Essentially, it’s the computerisation of manufacturing. This blog post from HYDAC will look at how Industry 4.0 will affect motion control products, what developments we can expect to see in the future, and how it will benefit the manufacturing industry.
Understanding Industry 4.0
Industry 4.0 is the industrial revolution we’re currently experiencing, best described as the era where computers and automation will come together seamlessly. Key components of Industry 4.0 include advanced digital technologies, the internet of things, big data cloud computing, and artificial intelligence. All of these things will revolutionise the way manufacturing is done and will make ‘smart factories’ commonplace in the near future. In essence, smart factories will be places where physical processes will be monitored by cyber physical systems, making it possible for the factory’s computer system to make smart and informed decentralised decisions with very little human input.
Understanding Motion Control
Put simply, motion control is a sub-field of automation that encompasses the systems (and the sub-systems) used in moving parts of machines. There are a number of components involved in motion control, including motion controllers, prime movers, actuators and energy amplifiers. Industry 4.0 is going to require machine controllers that are able to execute much more complex tasks than the programmable logic controllers currently being used, and this will be made possible through the use of a single hardware platform that simultaneously incorporates motion control, visualisation, logic and process control, complex programming languages, and software development tools.
