HYDAC’s YouTube video “How to update HMG 4000 firmware” provides a step-by-step guide to make updating firmware super easy.
The HYDAC HMG 4000 is a valuable tool used in the service and diagnostics of both mobile and industrial machines, specifically for the collection, display, analysis, storage, and transfer of data from sensors.
It may be connected to a PC where the HMGWIN software is used to graph the data to view and prepare reports etc.
In that the HMG 4000 is a modern electronic device it is advisable to update the firmware occasionally, similar to a computer, mobile phone, or tablet.
Steps to update firmware
Firstly, it's necessary to establish what firmware has already been installed on the HMG 4000.
To do this, select “device settings” and then “device information” (in the video version 1.05 is shown to have been installed on the device).
Following this, download the latest firmware version in order to update the HMG 4000.
The software is available at HYDAC’s website, with the sequence to follow being “download”, then “software”, and finally “electronics”.
The “firmware file” can be found at this location for downloading.
To install the firmware, the HMG 4000 must be connected to a mains supply to avoid the possibility of the battery running out during the update process.
A LED light confirms connection to the power supply.
At this point, the device can be powered and connected to a USB memory stick, and then the file can be moved from the USB stick to the HMG 4000.
From the home screen select “file manager” and then “USB” to navigate to the update folder, where version 1.10 is located.
Note that it’s possible to click the bottom of the icon’s list to ascertain what the icons represent.
Select “file”, then “copy icon” and finally “target folder” for the file to be copied. It must be placed in the folder named “updates” (it is necessary to update the HMG 4000 via the copied firmware file).
To do so select “device settings” and then “device information” from the home screen.
Here it is noted that the current firmware version is still 1.05.
Therefore select “software version” and find and update file “v1.10”.
A message appears: “Using the change list, please check which effects the installation has and if its saved files were affected by it”.
Here select “display change list”, with accompanying note: “after updating the device, recordings can’t open with older versions. The HMGWIN version as from 4.10 must be used. Older versions of HMGWIN will no longer be able to communicate with the device”.
A warning message appears: “It is not possible to stop the installation once it has been started. Please, do not switch off the HMG and do not unplug the power adapter from the power supply of the HMG. The HMG restarts after the update”.
A white screen appears showing the progress of the firmware update, which only takes seconds to complete.
The HMG 4000 restarts and displays its home screen. Here it can be confirmed that the update has been successful by checking the firmware version.
To do so, navigate to “device settings” and then “device information”, where it is made clear that the firmware version has been upgraded to version 1.10.
Once the update is complete, disconnect the USB memory stick and charging lead.
