An I/O module, also referred to as an input/ouput module or signal module, is an interface that provides a means for transferring information between an internal storage system and other connected I/O devices. These devices could be anything from printers and laptops to other pieces of technology with input and output facilities. I/O modules are typically used in conjunction with – and controlled by – a master electronic control system, which is often placed at a different location on the mobile application. The I/O module and mobile application communicate with each other using the standardised CAN protocol. This helps to minimise the amount of cabling used, therefore making for a more economic design.
Functions of the I/O Module
As a vital part of the equation to maximise the functionality of mobile applications, the I/O module is capable of numerous functions of its own. Among these are:
Control & Timing
The I/O module regulates traffic flow between internal resources and external devices, and co-operates with bus arbitrations.
The I/O module needs to be able to communicate with the central processing unit and the mobile application / external device.
Another essential function is for the I/O module to facilitate device communication. This can include the communication of commands, data and information about current status.
Due to the different speeds of the CPU, memory and other mobile applications, the I/O module needs to store the data and regulate the speed of data transfer according to the speed of each different element.
Detection of Errors
The I/O module must detect and report on any errors that occur such as malfunctions of a mechanical or electrical nature, or data errors during transmission.
