HYDAC has been recognised as an industry leader on sustainable packaging

APCO Annual Awards 2019 Ceremony

APCO, the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation, is a co-regulatory, not for profit organisation that partners with government and industry to reduce the harmful impact of packaging on the Australian environment.

The APCO Packaging Sustainability Framework (the Framework) aims to provide a consistent and transparent framework for assessing and tracking packaging sustainability across organisations. The Framework consists of thirteen independent criteria that belong to three separate categories: leadership, packaging outcomes and operations.

There are two types of criteria within the Framework:

  • Core criteria: mandatory.
  • Recommended criteria: not mandatory, but members are encouraged to complete them.

Each criterion is divided into five levels of performance ranging from “getting started” to “beyond best practice”.

Mr Siegfried Bergmann, Quality Assurance Manager at HYDAC Australia, said: “APCO acts as part of the government, and the government has made compulsory for all companies with a turnover greater than 5 million to either become a member of APCO or report directly to the government. In this case, companies need to be audited by the government authorities to comply with the covenant.”

Since joined APCO in 2018, HYDAC has implemented an effective process for its packaging operation and has now achieved Leading Level (level four out of five) for APCO’s seven mandatory core criteria.
HYDAC has put in place a closed-loop collaboration system with its suppliers to address tertiary packaging challenges. Also, a reusable packaging policy is in place for more than ten years, ensuring all shipments are consolidated to save the packaging. All HYDAC packaging material is locally sourced, with 95% of packaging classified as recyclable. Additionally, all HYDAC’s plastic packaging is now transparent so it can be identified in the sorting process at material recovery facilities in Australia.

Therefore, HYDAC has been nominated as a finalist for the Machinery & Hardware category in the 2019 APCO Awards. This nomination is the recognition of HYDAC’s excellent annual report results and the ongoing commitment demonstrated to meet the goals of the Australian Packaging Covenant.
The Awards have been presented at Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on Wednesday 20 November 2019.
